Beginning Fall 2020, undergraduate students taking classes in the College of Computing and Informatics are required to have their own personal laptop computer.
Picking a System
When purchasing a laptop, it is important to remember that it should last for the duration of your studies. Opting for a higher-performing machine helps keep it relevant longer. The College of Computing and Informatics requires a laptop that meets or exceeds the minimum system specifications listed below. Purchases can be made at UNC Charlotte's NinerTech. Students will be informed of the needed software needed for each course. However, some applications used in selected courses are not available natively in a Mac format. If an Apple laptop is preferred, the student will be responsible for installing Windows 10 via Boot Camp or a similar tool to run some of the applications required in business courses.
- Minimum Intel i5 Processor (or AMD equivalent) required – i7 Processor recommended
- Minimum 8GB RAM required – 16 GB RAM recommended
- 512 GB SSD Hard Drive
Who Is Required to Have A Laptop?Beginning Fall 2020, students taking courses in the College of Computing and Informatics are required to have their own personal laptop computer.
What do I do if I have a problem with my laptop?Having a working laptop is each student’s responsibility. For assistance, Institutional Technology Services staffs a walk-up service desk in Room 140C of Atkins Library. In addition, Atkins Library has a laptop lending program. Laptops can be checked out on a first come, first serve basis at the Circulation Desk located on the first floor near the main entrance. The loan period for laptops is 24 hours. For paid technical help, NinerTech(ninertech.uncc.edu) is located in the Popp Martin Student Union.
What about financial aid?Because the laptop will be required, students will be able to utilize financial aid to make the purchase. If you are receiving financial aid, you can submit a budget increase request for the actual cost of the laptop and related equipment. You may only receive one budget increase for a computer purchase during your enrollment.
