Title Talk: Evolution in Space

Abstract: How do individuals move through space? For most organisms, our best hope of answering this question is to find a way to use genetics as a lens on movement. I will discuss how we can use sequencing data to estimate how many viruses are transmitted from one infected host to another, and apply this method to influenza. I will then discuss how we can use spatial patterns of genetic diversity to infer more general movement patterns, particularly for organisms that occasionally move over very long distances.
